Giant Lipoma on Woman’s Back Resembles a Breast

An amazing story of a woman letting her lipoma grow to epic size over the course of 10 years. Giant lipomas are not very common in people as they are often removed surgically long before they reach giant proportions – primarily for cosmetic reasons but in some cases for health concerns.

Lipoma’s are generally harmless and made up of fatty tissue encased in a membrane that over time may grow in size and accumulate fatty tissue. Lipoma’s have been reported to have a genetic link as they tend to be inherited but can also be stimulated by imbalances in the body’s chemical makeup or even infection by some microorganisms. The exact reason why lipoma’s form is still an area of debate and much research still needs to be done in order to understand why these lumps of fatty tissue appear and sometimes grow to giant proportions.

This particular woman who remains anonymous was a heavy smoker and doctors suspect that there maybe a link between her giant lipoma and her heavy smoking habit. It is unclear why she let it grow to this size without seeing a doctor early to have it removed. The woman is currently awaiting surgery to have the giant lump removed according to a press release on News.com.au.

Exercise can work wonders for the human body – this I think every knows by now. But can exercise influence the formation and progression of lipoma? Or can exercise even help to prevent lipoma? This is a topic that has been highly discussed over the years. There are many experts that believe exercise is a factor for lipoma formation and can even help in preventing lipoma formation or even send some lipoma’s into regression.

Lipoma’s are believe by many experts to be formed due to chemical imbalances in the human body along with many other factors, some of which are genetic and inherited which we can’t do much about. So lets focus on the factors that we can control! The are many studies out there that have proven that proper diet and exercise can drastically help to increase your metabolism and stimulate organs like your liver and gallbladder to burn body fat. Well guess what? – Lipomas are made up of fatty tissue just like all the other fat in your body!

Lipomas are nothing more than fatty lumps that form usually under the skin. They tend to be harmless but sometimes can cause discomfort and even become a health risk to some if they are located in areas that can damage other body functions. Proper diet and especially regular exercise will without a doubt impact on your body’s body fat percentage, which will influence lipomas since they are made of fatty tissue. A reduction in body fat may lead to reduction in the size of a lipoma!

Reducing body fat, especially if you have too much of it, is always a good idea. Not just for lipoma treatment but also for other health and well-being issues. A regular exercise routine is needed for everyone and will help in preventing many diseases like cancer, obesity, cardio vascular…etc. Exercising stimulates your body’s metabolic rate and activates your liver in burning up more fat cells. There is a very high chance that this exercise will also help to shrink a lipoma and send it into regression.

When starting an exercise program it is important to start slowly and take it gradually. Your body is a highly adaptive machine – give it too much and it will break down (you give up!), give it too little and it will not react (and you will not see the benefit). You need to add exercise in at a pace where you feel comfortable and are gradually pushing your discomfort zone. I would recommend starting with 3 times a week of 20 minutes of an activity you enjoy doing – fast walking, jogging, swimming, bike riding, the gym, aerobics, zoomba…. actually whatever elevates your heart rate and gets you panting! It’s really simple and the hardest part is getting started. After a few weeks, increase your sessions to 30 minutes, then 45 minutes and then start to add in more weekly sessions. After about 8 weeks, you should be aiming for 4 sessions a week of 45-55 minutes.

This exercise should also be accompanied by a good healthy diet. Lots of clean water is always a good idea as this helps to detoxify your body and wash out all those unwanted salts and chemicals. There are plenty of web resources that go into how to plan a healthy diet, so a simple Google search should get you plenty of ideas. Lipoma Scientific Publications on the Rise

After a casual scientific literature scan of some of the more recent scientific publications for lipoma related studies I noticed a promising trend of increased publication in the field of lipoma. Below you will see a graph which i plotted using Infogr.am (cool software!) showing yearly publication numbers related to lipoma since the year 1886. You can see a clear increase in publications with a record number in 2013 of 400 peer-reviewed scientific publication for lipoma related studies. That’s more the one a day! For those awaiting a cure, these are promising statistics. Simone Youngman Lipoma to CancerA heart-felt and inspiring story this month of 14 year-old Simone Youngman on chroniclelive.co.uk demonstrates the importance of an accurate diagnosis for lipoma. You see, not all lumps growing under the skin are lipomas. Although lipoma is the most common soft-tissue benign tumor in humans (Scientific reference), there are many other types of tumors that can grow under the skin and resemble a lipoma. For example, a Sarcoma is quite rare but resembles a lipoma, which can develop into an aggressive and terminal cancer. Read a recent post I made on the difference between Sarcoma, Carcinoma and Lipoma.

One day, Simone noticed a lump on her side while putting on her swimming costume and told her mother. Her mother decided to take Simone immediately to the hospital, which she did. The initial “Soft” diagnosis by Simone’s doctor was a lipoma, which is a soft mass of fatty cells located under the skin and surrounded by a fibrous capsule. Lipomas are non-cancerous so at this moment there was nothing to worry about. However, to be sure Simone’s doctor referred her to a specialist for an ultrasound to get an accurate lipoma diagnosis. The results from the ultrasound were also inconclusive and Simone underwent further testing in the form of a MRI scan and a biopsy.

Simone was ultimately diagnosed with undifferentiated soft tissue sarcoma. Soft tissue sarcomas arise from tissues such as fat, muscle, nerves, fibrous tissues, blood vessels, or deep skin tissues. They can appear anywhere on the body but most are found on the arms and legs, and less commonly on trunk, head, neck, internal organs or abdominal cavity. Sarcomas are relatively rare compared to the much more common carcinomas, which are derived from epithelial cells.

Four to five weeks later, results showed that Simone had cancer and needed urgent medical treatment. She started an aggressive course of chemotherapy followed by an operation to remove the tumor. Fortunately, things turned out ok for Simone. But imagine she had not done any followup diagnostic tests on that suspected lipoma?

Differences between a Sarcoma, Carcinoma and Lipoma

What are the differences between a Sarcoma, Carcinoma and Lipoma?

Cancer-biologyFor most people, these terms are scientific “jargon” but its important to know the difference. Especially if you have a lipoma and want to understand and appreciate the differences between a lipoma verses a sarcoma or carcinoma.

Let me explain.

A sarcoma is a cancer that arises from transformed cells of mesenchymal origin which are for example: bone, cartilage, fat, muscle, vascular, or hematopoietic tissues. Any malignant tumor arising from one of these tissues is referred to as a sarcoma. Human sarcomas are quite rare. The first sign of a sarcoma in an arm, leg, or torso may be a painless lump or swelling very much like a lipoma!

A carcinoma on the other hand, in much more common and originate from epithelial cells. Malignant tumors arising from tissues such as breast, colon and lung, are referred to as carcinomas.

Both are formed when the DNA in your cells (our genes) mutate and start to behave abnormally and start to exhibit malignant properties.

Most lumps that develop under the skin are not a sarcoma or a carcinoma. They are often a Lipoma which is the most common soft-tissue lump found in humans and pets. Lipomas are made up of fat cells (adipose tissue) and are encapsulated by a thin fibrous capsule to give them their district localized lump formation. It’s important to realize that a lipoma is usually not a health concern until it starts to grow and negatively affect adjacent areas. Lipomas can take years to grow and may cause pain as they start to press against surrounding nerves and muscle tissue. Lipomas do not necessarily have to grow and can remain the same size for years or even an entire life-time.

It’s important to consult with your doctor on any lumps that form under your skin, especially if they are growing and causing you discomfort.
